More than 100 local school children had the opportunity to take part in an open coaching session last week, led by professional rugby union player and former England captain Owen Farrell.
England's all-time leading points scorer, multi-time European champion with Saracens, and one of the most decorated fly-halves in modern rugby history, Owen was in Jersey as part of a visit to the Island organised by Nudge, a Jersey-based organisation that aims to help young people build confidence and learn new skills through sport, and supported by Suntera Global.
The children’s session was held at the Jersey Rugby Club on Saturday 4th July, with the 11-16 year-olds taking part coming from all over the Island and a range of schools to benefit from Owen’s experience, through a number of drills and team exercises.
As well as offering his coaching to budding young rugby players on the Island, during his visit Owen also took part in several events for Suntera, including a Q&A session with the firm’s team in Jersey, and an event for clients.
Commenting on his visit, Owen Farrell said: “It was a pleasure to come over to Jersey and lead this session for the children. There is clearly so much enthusiasm for rugby in the Island and having the opportunity to pass on advice and give so many young people a platform to grow in confidence was a real privilege.”
Dan Hawkes of Nudge added: “Partnering with Suntera to bring Owen Farrell to Jersey for this open session was about creating access, building confidence and giving young players the opportunity to learn from one of the game’s great leaders. This was more than a training session, it was about creating memories, inspiring the next generation and showing what’s possible.”
Angela Morris, Managing Director, Suntera Jersey commented: “It has been truly inspiring to welcome Owen to the Island and see him pass on his knowledge and motivation to the younger generation. It is such a rare opportunity to meet and learn from professionals at the top of their field and we were thrilled to support Nudge in bringing Owen over.”
